TAPE TITLE: |
The
Coming of Spring |
| OVERALL
COMMENTS: |
After
a long cold winter, this is a mix to slowly bring you into Spring.
Not all upbeat, but not all downers - a mix of uplifting and
depressing numbers to keep you real during this hopeful transitional
period. Looking back, I think i sacrificed some tempo to stick
to the theme; but there are definitely a few tracks that ought
to kick your ass off the couch! Enjoy. |
| |
SONG
TITLE - ARTIST |
| Track
1: |
Rise
- Rainer Maria
|
| COMMENTS: |
Starts
slow and builds as the drums kick in and vocals grow from a
whisper to a scream- like Spring. Beautiful number - track one
from Look Now Look Again. This is the first of four slowish
'build to spring' tracks.
"i'm
laying in the soil,
is it time for me to rise?" |
| TRACK
2: |
Spring
Cleaning - Neva Dinova (w/ Bright Eyes)
|
| COMMENTS: |
This
is a Bright Eyes track, but completely performed by Neva Dinova.
A slower alt-rockish number, great for the rainy Spring Day.
"So I'm having it out with the rain
It argues so long and so loud
It keeps tapping and talking
We're walking forever on First Avenue headed south
And all the traffic lights blur
Into a bright bouquet
My heart is in mothballs
It's been packed away
And I can't get to it no way
Until the birds return for spring cleaning"
|
| TRACK
3: |
What
Light - Wilco
|
| COMMENTS: |
From
Sky Blue Sky - a great song, the first glimmer of hope! "There's
a Light, What Light!" |
| TRACK
4: |
Plea
from a Cat Named Virtue - The Weakerthans
|
| COMMENTS: |
Off
of Reconstruction Site - this song is written from the perspective
of a cat encouraging its owner to get up and do something. After
a long winter I completely relate to the cat... but also the
owner:
"All
you ever want to do is drink and watch TV, and frankly that
thing doesn't really interest me." |
| TRACK
5: |
TV
- Headlights
|
| COMMENTS: |
Kicking
off a number of upbeat songs to get your Seasonally Affected
ass of the couch!
"i
can not stand to watch the TV
lions and the clowns keep staring at me" |
| TRACK
6: |
Wake
Up - The Arcade Fire
|
| COMMENTS: |
Need
I even say anything about this call to action?
"Children,
wake up
Hold your mistake up
Before they turn the summer into dust" |
| TRACK
7: |
Wake
Up - The Replacements
|
| COMMENTS: |
An
incredibly fun song; look outside- "Wake Up and wonder where
you are!!!" |
| TRACK
8: |
Elephant
Gun - Beirut
|
| COMMENTS: |
"Let
the seasons begin!" |
| TRACK
9: |
An
Attempt to Tip the Scales - Bright Eyes
|
| COMMENTS: |
Spring
is all about beginnings - detox your winter blues, come back to
life.
"Winter's gonna end i'm gonna clean these veins again / So
close to dying that i finally can start living" |
| TRACK
10: |
The
Coming of Spring - The Rapture
|
| COMMENTS: |
Make
no mistake about it - this song will kick your ass onto the
dancefloor!
"Get
yourself together!
Get out of your head
Without outer persuasions
You're better off dead
Learn how to breathe
You'd better learn how to shine
These obser-ma-vations
Are mah-ma-ma, mah-ma-ma,
muh-ma-ma-ma-mine." |
| TRACK
11: |
Spring
And By Summer Fall - Blonde Redhead
|
| COMMENTS: |
Just
a great song to listen to while gazing at your shoes on your Spring
day walk. |
| TRACK
12: |
Song
For Sunshine - Belle & Sebastian
|
| COMMENTS: |
B&S
bring the funk with a disco-esque beat on this poppy number. Begins
a set of songs for sunshine! |
| TRACK
13: |
Sun,
Sun, Sun - The Elected
|
| COMMENTS: |
A
desperate plea for things to come... really a very sad song,
but there's hope in sun sun sun...
"so
sun, sun, sun
what are you doing?
you went behind the clouds
but all the rain came down
my old house is in ruins
if you would come out again
and dry up all the rain
then I'd climb right up again
like that spider in that nursery rhyme
and these tales, well they're not meant to
but it's time that we make them
come true" |
| TRACK
14: |
Watch
the Sunrise - Big Star
|
| COMMENTS: |
This
is about as uplifting lyrically as the disc gets - but oh, so
apropos:
"I can feel it, now it's time
Open your eyes
Fears be gone, it won't be long
There's a light in the sky
It's okay to look outside
The day it will abid
And watch the sunrise" |
| TRACK
15: |
All
He Wants to Do Is Fish - The Replacements
|
| COMMENTS: |
Picks
the mix back up with this hilarious number from a band that
knows how to have fun. I don't know the first thing about fishing...
but heel, after a long winter it sounds great!
"For some it takes a lot to make their life whole
But all he needs is water and
His fishin' pole
All he wants to do is fish" |
| TRACK
16: |
You
Can Never Hold Back Spring - Tom Waits
|
| COMMENTS: |
A
personal favorite - Tom Waits brooding over the hope that comes
with Spring.
"You can never hold back spring
You can be sure I will never stop believing
The blushing rose, it will climb
Spring ahead or fall behind
Winter dreams the same dream, every time
Baby you can never hold back spring
Even though you've lost your way
The world is dreaming, dreaming of spring" |

being Dave Doughman |
| TRACK
4: |
Father
Sgt. Christmas Card - Guided By Voices
|
| COMMENTS: |
GBV!
Not my favorite song of theirs by a long-shot, but it's a fitting
one for the obligatory GBV song on my mix |

Christmas - The Kinks
|
| COMMENTS: |
Such
a great Kinks song, Christmas-themed or not |
| TRACK

A
fairly random song even for Ted Leo |

|
| COMMENTS: |
Teenage
Fanclub has really never written a bad song |
| TRACK
8: |

This
song always makes me think of winter, especially driving over
the Skyway in the winter looking at the great frozen lake |

very smooth at first, but sorta freaks out later in the song...begins

|

Concluding
my E6 selections, a pretty, chamber-pop kinda song |
| TRACK
12: |
Lonely

|
| COMMENTS: |
A
lot of self-delusion in this song |
| TRACK

|
| COMMENTS: |
Can't
get much more appropriate for a winter mix than this song, especially
in Buffalo |
| TRACK
16: |
Fifteen
Feet of Pure White Snow
- Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
|
| COMMENTS: |
A
ridiculous song with a creepy piano...Oh My Lord! |
| TRACK
17: |
I
Want To Be Cold - The Microphones
|
| COMMENTS: |
Fuzzy |
| TRACK
18: |
New

|
| COMMENTS: |
Sweet
piano in this song too, but much less creepy |
| TRACK
19: |
Xmas
Curtain - My Morning Jacket
|
| COMMENTS: |
I
love the steel drums...MMJ Does Xmas Fiasco Style has a bunch
of other Christmas songs on it and is a must for any fan. |
| TRACK
20: |
Christmas
at the Zoo - The Flaming Lips
|
| COMMENTS |
I
had to put this on here, aside from this being a great song with
a good beat, I respect the attitude of the animals...you have
to make your own destiny and save yourself from your own problems.
Wow that's deep! |
| TRACK
21: |
Christmas
Steps - Mogwai
|
| COMMENTS |
It's
usually pretty hard to work Mogwai songs into a mix, especially
10 minute long ones that take a few minutes to get going. That
being said, I think this song caps everything off nicely. |

From:
The Engine Hum. This song is excellent. Very solid release on
Harvest Sum Records. Someone once called it the Wilco album that
never got made (that's a big compliment). |

From:
The Reminder. An immediately catchy album - solid all the way
through. |

Heartbroke
- The Good Life
|
| COMMENTS: |
From:
Help Wanted Nights. First - fucking great album title! Not as
good as "Album of the Year" (which is excellent). But
a solid album. They will rock your socks off live! |

| COMMENTS: |
From:
Matt Barber Hussalonia. Wow - what a record! I encourage you to
download this for free from Hussalonia.com. |
| TRACK
14: |
No
one's Gonna Love You - Band Of Horses
|
| COMMENTS: |
From:
Cease to Begin. Took me a bit to get into this album, but it's
worth it! A different and fuller release than "Everything
All the Time", a tighter sound - it really is a beautiful
record. |
| TRACK
15: |
While
You Were Sleeping - Elvis Perkins
|
| COMMENTS: |
From:
Ash Wednesday. This song is great. The album does not do these
guys justice (definitly worth hearing/having). Their live performance
will give you chills. The Letterman performance (You can youtube
it) was an instant classic. Another band you can be excited
about, I imagine whatever they do next will be great! |

1: |
Bells
On - Sloan
|
| COMMENTS: |
This
is a wonderful song about love, loss, betrayal and death. If
this doesn’t make you feel all warm and fuzzy about the
darkest days of the year than nothing will. Have you ever wondered
if your x-girlfriend would attend your funeral, and would she
"actually wear lipstick"? Well the boys in Sloan definitely
have and they wrote this nostalgic little ditty about it. |
| TRACK
2: |
Dinner
Bells - Wolf Parade
|
| COMMENTS: |
With
an ominous melody and lyrics like “I’ve made friends
with the hangman, so there’ll will be no more winters,
There’ll be no more springs” Who couldn’t
just listen to it over and over again while driving through
forest lawn this fall.
|
| TRACK
3: |
Down
In A Rabbit Hole - Bright Eyes
|
| COMMENTS: |
Ah
yes, sever depression and suicidal ideations. This song is an
Anthem for those suffering from S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder).
Conor Oberst really knows how to make you feel not alone in your
isolation. |
| TRACK
4: |
The
Funeral - Band of Horses
|
| COMMENTS: |
Now
this is some brilliant shit. Is it just me or is this song more
about revenge from the grave than mourning for the dead? You decide.
Try not to sing along with this macabre song of vindication. |
| TRACK
5: |
Ashes
to Ashes - David Bowie
|
| COMMENTS: |
"I'm
happy, hope you're happy too” Bowie’s wonderful tale
of fighting off the vices that corrupt you, and losing every time.
This one never gets old. |
| TRACK
6: |
Atmosphere
- Joy Division
|
| COMMENTS: |
Like
a lament from an unprepared widower, Ian Curtis' voice demands
"DON'T WALK AWAY" and you can feel his frustration and
pain. Missery truely loves company when listening to this one. |
| TRACK
7: |
Leave
- R.E.M
|
| COMMENTS: |
Off
their underrated album Adventures in Hi Fi, this song is both
sonically abrasive and beautiful. Stipe cry’s out “To
Leave it, Believe it, Leave it all behind” on this song
of abandonment and loss of hope. |
| TRACK
8: |
Fiery
Crash - Andrew Bird
|
| COMMENTS: |
Andrew
Bird’s cautionary tale of air travel gone bad. This one
is more up beat than some off the other songs on this mix but
Bird screams out autumn and traumatic ends so I through it fit
in. Enjoy…. |
| TRACK
9: |
Exit
Music (For a Film) - Radiohead |
| COMMENTS: |
Before
all the hype and press and internet innovation, radiohead released
a priceless album called OK Computer. Exit Music (For A Film)
is one of my favorite tracks off that album. With a progression
like no other this song is about escapism. I always thought it
could be the theme song for Romeo and Juliet (or any other doomed
lovers) who would rather live together in death than in this ugly
world. |
| TRACK
10: |
Asleep
- The Smiths |
| COMMENTS: |
You
need not go any further than the Morrissey to hear the best songs
of self-mourning. Asleep is the most sad and/or depressing song
in The Smiths catalog, and that is saying a lot. |

This

the anti-mix is absolutely necessary. |

An

Kings
Crossing - Elliott Smith
|
| COMMENTS: |
From
the posthumous "From a Basement on The Hill" - amazing
track, riddled with lyrics about drug use, apathy, and suicide.
Happy Holidays!
"It's Christmas time, and the needle's on the tree
a skinny Santa's bringing something to me
his voice is overwhelming, his speech is slurred,
and i olnly understand every other word.
Open your parachute, and grab your gun
Falling down like an omen, a setting sun."

Dead

| COMMENTS: |
Finland's

"I'll be dead by X'mas now anyway, Tell me will you remember
me that day
When you've found a new one, Who's better than I ever was
I'll be dead by X'mas now anyway, Please give all my things away
They'll make great X'mas presents for you, And for all my friends" |
| TRACK
4: |
Cold
White Christmas - Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
|
| COMMENTS: |
With
a name like CTFTPA, you know you're going to get some solid depressing
songwriting. CTFTPA is essentially a solo effort from Owen Ashworth
and his casiotone. This is from 2006's "Etiquette"
"Feather down - the nights get so cold
and you ignore the smell of mold as you smooth out the folds
when you're on your own you've got no one to please
in a Minnesota city just as bare andas mean as the winter trees
But you'll be damned if you're the one making collect calls
on a cold white Christmas in St Paul
Yeah, it's a cold white Christmas in St Paul " |
| TRACK
5: |
Airport
Lounge - The Weakerthans |
| COMMENTS: |
Not
a holiday song - but some of the lyrics are a perfect fit for
the banality of the holidays. I think of this song whenever I
have to step foot in a mall. Basically - if you'd rather shoot
yourself than have to wait in some god-awful shopping line and
listen to other people's trivial conversation, this song is for
you.
"These people make me angry, what is yours and what is mine
Talk of shopping, pure white noise, abide by every don't-walk
sign
Dinner at posh resturants, so dim and very nice -
nineteen dollars and fifty cents for some tasteless chicken and
wild rice" |
| TRACK
6: |
November
- Azure Ray
|
| COMMENTS: |
Soft,
melancholy ballad. November kicks off the holiday season, and
this track captures the misery of the first post-break up holiday
season... fun times! From the very solid 6 track "November"
EP (2002).
"So we're speeding towards that time of year
To the day that marks that you're not here
And I think I'll want to be alone
So please understand that I don't answer the phone
I'll just sit and stare at my deep blue walls
Until I can see nothing at all" |
| TRACK
7: |
December
- Teenage Fanclub |
| COMMENTS: |
From
the absolutely phenomenal album "Bandwagonesque"
"She don't even care but I would die for her love.
I've had this plan for many years but now I can't remember.
I wanted to assassinate December...
I wanted to assassinate December." |
| TRACK
8: |
X-mas
Cake - Rilo Kiley |
| COMMENTS: |
I
think this is off a Saddle Creek comp from some years back.
You won't find many Xmas songs more depressing than this. Jenny
Lewis does defeated so well!
"When I take off my make-up, I look old and defeated
I'm not so dangerous
Cry into my Christmas cake
Starin' holes into me all night
You should just give up
'cause our love's become sellin' secrets
to the Russians
They don't need
The cold war is on between you and me...
There's no more runnin' water
Wrappin' presents in the dark
Move into your car
Change where you park
Too bad that job carolin' department stores fell through
But the new year is right in front of you
Cry into your Christmas cake
Don't know what else to do..."
|
| TRACK
9: |
12.23.95
- Jimmy Eat World
|
| COMMENTS: |
From
1999's "Clarity" - best album these guys ever produced
- it holds a very dear place in my sentimental record collection.
Lyrics in their entirety:
"Didn't mean to leave you hanging on,
I didn't mean to leave you all alone
I didn't know what to say
Merry Christmas baby. . .
Merry Christmas baby" |
| TRACK

Feb.
15th - Bright Eyes
|
| COMMENTS: |
Very
early BE's track. Written about a birthday, and actually released
on "Noise Floor", a b-sides and rarities album, as "Happy
Birthday to Me". Works as a great year-end song. One of fav
BE's tracks, beautiful backup vox by Maria Taylor here- who does
depressing desperation better than Conor!? Love him!
"All eyes on the calendar
Another year I claim of total indifference
To here, the days pile up
With decisions to be made, I'm sure all of them were wrong"

Now
I Know You're Really Gone - Hussalonia |
| COMMENTS: |
This
is a damn-near perfect pop song! The lyrics below give just
snippet of this supreme pop-goodness. I highly recommend you
download it for free from Hussalonia.com!
"Pretty pretty sentimental song
cathc your wave and say 'so long'
Another new best whatever over here,
an old christmas film and a bottle of beer
Ohh, now I know you're really gone." |

The
New Year - Death Cab for Cutie
|
| COMMENTS: |
Track
1 on "Transatlanticism", actually a rather upbeat toe-tapping
song. A must on the list for the lyric "So this is the new
year, and I don't feel any different."
"So everybody put your best suit or dress on
Let's make believe that we are wealthy for just this once
Lighting firecrackers off on the front lawn
As thirty dialogues bleed into one" |

HWY
R - The Rock-A-Teens
|
| COMMENTS: |
The
Rock-A-Teens are disappeared - but "Sweet Bird of Youth"
lives on as one of the best albums you my not own. Not for everyone,
these guys have a very unique sound - everything kinda sounds
like it was recorded in a cave. I'm sorry i missed these guys
at lauded Mohawk show years back. Probably my favorite RAT songs;
I cannot do this song justice - sometimes i'll crank it to 11
and hit repeat - the song is that fucking good!
"In a cold Kentucky December,
your lips turning blue, what a breathtaking view"
. . ."Go slow, slowdown, we're too fast -
Joe, is that heaven, is that heaven we just passed
I wept as you slept, and i stepped on the gas. . ." |

Fairytale
of NY - The Pogues
|
| COMMENTS: |
Truly
classic. Shane McGowen and Kirsty MacColl (RIP) are a perfect
duet. On here as the mandatory track - belongs on every Xmas mix,
and is recognized by all.
"You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last" |

White
Christmas - Bright Eyes |
| COMMENTS: |
Before
you Conor haters dismiss the track - this is all Maria Taylor,
released on the random Bright Eyes "A Christmas Album"
(Saddle Creek Records). Stephen Merritt's dark take on "O
Tennenbaum" and Taylor's melancholic take on this classic
really bookend the disc quite nicely. |
