COMMENTS: |
For
some reason, in 2005 I started thinking about the identity of
songs in relationship to their placement on a compact disc.
Harry Nilsson wrote "One is the loneliest number that you'll
ever know." Well, what about two ones? Eleven is the cruelest
number. To prove it, I went through all my CDs and made this
mix of all my favorite "cruel elevens." |
| |
SONG
TITLE - ARTIST |
| Track
1: |
I
Love You, But You're Boring - The Beautiful South |
| COMMENTS: |
A
very strange song. A head turner. Track eleven on "Welcome
to the Beautiful South."
"Remember
the time
When I turned the house into a rocket ship
And you refused to come to Mars
You said "It's too far" |
| TRACK
2: |
Hazy
Shade of Winter - Simon and Garfunkle
|
| COMMENTS: |
Don't
let the Bangles version ruin this song. This is a really great,
concise pop song. Track eleven on "Bookends."
"Hang on to your hopes, my friend
Thats an easy thing to say, but if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend
That you can build them again" |
| TRACK
3: |
Wasting
My Time (reprise) - Sam Phillips
|
| COMMENTS: |
This
version can only be found on the import, and admittedly, it's
not as good as the original. But, it's track eleven on "Fan
Dance." Mix tape makers, find this song and add it to your
mix-tape vocabulary. This song is your anthem. |
| TRACK
4: |
You're
No Good - Betty Everett
|
| COMMENTS: |
Track
eleven on "Oldies But Goodies Volume Eleven." It's sexy,
it's cruel, it's a track eleven. |
| TRACK
5: |
Rock
and Roll Suicide - David Bowie
|
| COMMENTS: |
Track
eleven on the Ziggy Stardust record. Real heart-breaker for those
inclined to break their own hearts.
"You're too old to lose it, too young to choose it
And the clocks waits so patiently on your song" |
| TRACK
6: |
Missing
the War - Ben Folds Five
|
| COMMENTS: |
Very
Beatles-y. Sad sounding. Dramatic. Cruel! Track eleven on "Whatever
and Ever and Amen."
"So much time so little to say" |
| TRACK
7: |
My
Favourite Chords - The Weakerthans
|
| COMMENTS: |
Track
eleven on "Left and Leaving." Beautiful and oh, so cruel!
"You are a radio. You are an open door.
I am a faulty string of blue christmas lights.
You swim through frequencies.
You let that stranger in, as I'm blinking off and on and off again." |
| TRACK
8: |
Eternity
- Imperial Teen |
| COMMENTS: |
Track
eleven on the criminally under-rated and over-looked "Seasick."
"Freeze the frosting on the girlie magazines for eternity." |
| TRACK
9: |
All
the Time in the World - Nik Freitas
|
| COMMENTS: |
This
guy sounds a lot like Ben Kweller, maybe too much, but this is
a good song. Sad, cruel, track eleven on "Here's Laughing
at You." |
| TRACK
10: |
I'll
Be Home - The Flamingos
|
| COMMENTS: |
Doo-wop
ballads are among the saddest sounding recordings ever made. Track
eleven on "The Complete Chess Masters." |
| TRACK
11: |
Falling
- Ben Kweller
|
| COMMENTS: |
Sometimes
I hate this kid. Then other times I don't. This may be a bit maudlin
for me, but what the hell, its a mix tape. Track eleven on "Sha
Sha."
"We could talk if days weren't so fast,
And mistakes just leave it so unsure.
Wanna hold you like never before
in case were falling and I love you more and more."' |
| TRACK
12: |
I
Love a Long Goodbye - Sloan
|
| COMMENTS: |
Maybe
the only good song from this record, but what a great song. Keep
this one for your break-up mixes. Track eleven on "Pretty
Together."
"Talk to me tomorrow
I might have another story
I'll make sure I do
I love a long goodbye" |
| TRACK
13: |
The
World Keeps Going Round - Of Montreal
|
| COMMENTS: |
A
Kinks cover. Track eleven on "Horse & Elephant Eatery
(no elephants allowed)"
"What's the use of worrying 'cause you'll die alone?
Times will be hard, rain will fall
And you'll feel mighty low
But the world keeps going round
The world keeps going round
You just can't stop it
The world keeps going round"' |
| TRACK
14: |
Please
Don't Rock Me Tonight - Fountains of Wayne
|
| COMMENTS: |
A
fun pop song about being being depressed. Track eleven on their
debut.
"I didn't mean to make the trendy guy mad
But the feeling I'm immersed in now
Can only turn a good party bad" |
| TRACK
15: |
AAA
- Grandpaboy
|
| COMMENTS: |
No
one is crueler or more elevener than Paul Westerberg. Drink up,
friends; it doesn't get any better than this.
"Take your diet pills
How many have you got?
"I'll kiss you on the cheek
Leave you in the parking lot
I ain't got anything for anyone anymore" |

ARTIST
- SONG TITLE |
| TRACK
1: |
Matthew
Ryan - I Hope your God has Mercy on Mine |
| COMMENTS:
|
Ryan
deserves more appreciation than he seems to get. He has a raspy
voice often compared to Dylan’s (but who isn’t?),
but his songs combine real social commentary with a kind of wistfulness
that’s intriguing. This is one of his most outspoken critiques
of the state of the union. And it ain’t pretty—but
there is always a sense of hope and beauty between—and in--
many of the lines. |
| TRACK
2: |
The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site |
| COMMENTS:
|
This
may seem merely personal but it’s a beautiful lyric about
how so many feel these days—lost and lonely and scared.
Mixed in with the gorgeous images are some very clever lines.
Great song! |
| TRACK
3: |
Mekons - Hello Cruel World |
| COMMENTS: |
A
punk band still recording, and sounding super contemporary after
all these years. The title says it all. But you have to hear the
stark, brutal lyric to realize how brave this band is in looking
straight and fearlessly at—to paraphrase William Burroughs—what
is really on the end of the fork before we, inevitably, eat it.
|
| TRACK
4: |
Dead
Prez - Behind Enemy Lines |
| COMMENTS: |
The
best political black band to come along in a long time. The rage
these guys feel is incinerating, for lack of a better word. The
whole album - Lets Get Free - is a tour de force of black rage
written in incredibly sophisticated political terms. |
| TRACK
5: |
The
Clash - Lost in the Supermarket |
| COMMENTS: |
Another
amazing punk band. This one about our consumer society and how
it demeans us, selling us “guaranteed personality”.
The Clash was one of the great bands, unrepentantly radical during
a very conservative era. I could have chosen much more overtly
political stuff, but this one is such a gem. |
| TRACK
6: |
Jenny
Lewis and the Watson Twins - Rise up with Fists |
| COMMENTS: |
A
laundry list of the terrors and horrors we live with, and the
hopeless corruption that surround us like a never ending stream
of tabloid news. But its angry enough to end up with fists in
the air. |
| TRACK
7: |
Neko
Case - Thrice All American |
| COMMENTS: |
This
little song packs in a lot of American tragedy in a few neat lines.
Her ambivalence about staying in the small town she came from
mixed with real anger at the thought of its ending up losing its
character to Wal-Mart expresses a complicated set of feelings
about what’s happening to those towns that still have character,
but nonetheless can’t hold a restless youth population drawn
to the city like moths to a flame. Neko rocks, even in this small
poignant song. |
| TRACK
8: |
Steve
Earle - Xmas in Washington |
| COMMENTS: |
The
hillbilly twang seems to turn off a lot of people. That’s
a shame because no one is writing fearlessly radical songs like
he is. He blew my mind with his first album which actually dealt
with the live of the southern working class! Who does that? (at
least from a progressive pov. Lynyrd Skynyrd he isn’t.)
But he’s gotten angrier and more political with every album.
This is a song so heart weary about the state of the union and
so nostalgic for more progressive times, that it touches a real
nerve. Righteously great song. |
| TRACK
9: |
Bright
Eyes - At the Bottom of Everything |
| COMMENTS: |
One
of my favorites BE’s songs. As always he is a master poet
and social critic, but this one has such a quirky beginning and
singable chorus that it hooked me the first time I heard it. |
| TRACK
10: |
Gram
Parsons - Sin City |
| COMMENTS: |
A
trip to Vegas with one of the most influential songwriters who
never had a hit or was really famous. Vegas is more Disney World
than Sin City these days, but this song gives you a real sense
of what it used to be before Mickey Mouse took over |
| TRACK
11: |
Bob
Dylan - Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) |
| COMMENTS: |
It
is what it says, a Dylanesque look at American imperialism from
the pov of the poor native working for the Yankee dollar. But
it’s also one of those long winding tall tales in which
things keep happening strangely and the narrator’s growing
fear is palpable, clever and moving. |
| TRACK
12: |
Mary
Gauthier - Mercy Now |
| COMMENTS: |
Beautiful
song that moves from personal to national despair. A cry for mercy
for a country that doesn’t deserve—but needs it. If
you check You Tube’s Katrina 2005—Mercy Now you will
really get a taste of what she is all about. Just footage of Katrina
as the song follows the images—or vice versa? |
| TRACK
13: |
Paul
Simon - American Tune |
| COMMENTS: |
This
is an unforgettable, delicately moving short history of America—as
its weary narrator wonders “what went wrong.” The
juxtaposition of imagery is so vivid, while the narrator’s
tales of the end of the Dream for so many so despairing, that
it can almost make you cry. |
| TRACK
14: |
Talking
Heads - Slippery People |
| COMMENTS: |
If
you’ve never seen the video check out the not-so-great samples
on You Tube. Talking Heads was an amazing band whose disconnected
lyrics and phrases seemed to sum up a whole era when we “stop[ped]
making sense”. This is abt such complete alienation that
the narrator has to keep asking himself if anything in his life
is actually real. And David Byrne’s physical performance
is pure art in itself if you can find it. |
| TRACK
15: |
Leonard
Cohen - Democracy |
| COMMENTS: |
A demand for hope even as the country goes to hell. It’s
a truly great song about America—past, present, and possible
future. Brilliant lyrics and irony of course. |
