Songs for Whatever Travels/Travails

DATE: 11/28/07
SUBMITTED BY: Joseph
EMAIL: murrayjf3@gmail.com
LOCALE: Buffalo, NY
MIX TAPE CATEGORY: Escapism
MIX TAPE TITLE: Songs For Whatever Travels/Travails
OVERALL COMMENTS:
Escapism is an essential aspect for any road trip/travel mix- whether you're leaving for a few days or for "good" - we're all running from/to something, and these songs make a great soundtrack for the journey to/from wherever you're going, or wherever you've been.

SONG TITLE  -  ARTIST
Track 1: Departure - R.E.M. R.E.M. - New Adventures in Hi-Fi - Departure
COMMENTS:

I'm bookending the disc with two great R.E.M. tracks from the very underappreciated "New Adventures In HiFi". The disc makes for perfect travel music, which might have something to do it being mostly written and recorded on the road during the "Monster" tour. Very unique, very strong release here - if you haven't heard, dust it off, or go buy it used - it's a gem!

TRACK 2: This Time Tommorow - The Kinks The Kinks - The Darjeeling Limited - This Time Tomorrow
COMMENTS:

Fucking flawless track - top 10, easy - definite classic. Simple, yet sound - and immediately catchy. Begins with the sound of an airplane taking off; perfect fit for all you travellers. Should note Wes Anderson uses the track to accentuate the stellar opening scene of The Darjeeling Limited.

TRACK 3: Won't Be Home - The Old 97's Old 97's - Drag It Up - Won't Be Home
COMMENTS:

This songs rocks pretty hard. Great imagery for a classic western escape from a loved one... or whatever it is you're leaving behind.

"you're a bottle cap away
from pushing me too far
well the problem's gettin' big
an it's a compact car
so i won't feel so bad
i did all i could do
now i'm on wounded knee
and we're at waterloo
so please get out of my car

i was born in the backseat of a mustang
on a cold night in a hard rain
and the very first song that the radio sang
was "i won't be home no more"

TRACK 4: If It Takes All Night - Frank Black & The Catholics Frank Black & The Catholics - Dog in the Sand - If It Takes All Night
COMMENTS:

A trucker anthem of sorts. Great track from the uber-profilfic, progressively country, post-Pixie. He also gives a nod to rockabilly pioneer Johnny Horton. Can be found on "Dog in the Sand."

"some call it the ribbon
some say the white line
i say truckstop living
well, it suits me fine
everyday of the week
everyday of the week
we heard some other fellers talking
i think it's going to be a good fight
tonight the radio is rocking
i'm going to hear my favorite song
if it takes all night"

TRACK 5: I Can't Forget - Jarvis Cocker Jarvis Cocker - Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man (Motion Picture Soundtrack) - I Can't Forget
COMMENTS:

This is a great song to listen to while on the road - originally by Leonard Cohen, Jarvis (of Pulp fame) does a phenomenal job here from the film "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man". The visual stage performance from the film really seals the deal here. Always me of Santa Fe. . .

"I'm burning up the road
I'm heading down to Phoenix
I got this old address
Of someone that I knew
It was high and fine and free
Ah, you should have seen us
And I can't forget, I can't forget
I can't forget but I don't remember who

I'll be there today
With a big bouquet of cactus
I got this rig that runs on memories
And I promise, cross my heart,
They'll never catch us
But if they do, just tell them it was me"

TRACK 6: Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf) - The Pixies Pixies - Complete "B" Sides - Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf Mix)
COMMENTS:

Okay, im in a rut with the regulars - but all is good. This is a classic, the "UK Surf" version is in the heart of every "Pump Up of the Volume" fan. Talk Hard!

"cease to resist, giving my goodbye
drive my car into the ocean
you'll think i'm dead, but i sail away
on a wave of mutilation
a wave
wave
i've kissed mermaids, rode the el nino
walked the sand with the crustaceans
could find my way to mariana
on a wave of mutilation,
wave of mutilation
wave of mutilation
wave"

TRACK 7: Hop A Plane - Tegan & Sara Tegan & Sara - The Con - Hop a Plane
COMMENTS:

From "The Con" - a really great disc; shows their youth at times, but that doesnt stop this disc from being a fun accompaniment to any drive. Hop a Plane is a good relationship escape - but works as a metaphor for a lot of life's travels.

"Took the train back, back to where I came from
I took it all alone, it's been so long, I know
Imagine me there my heart asleep with no air
Begging ocean please, help me drown these memories
All I need to hear is that you're not mine
I'm moving east then, somewhere far away from the sight of my hands, the sight of me not moving
You can't just hop a plane and come and visit me again
I claim it's in my head and I regret offering."

TRACK 8: Another Travelin' Song - Bright Eyes Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning - Another Travelin' Song
COMMENTS:

Quintescenial 'On the Road' song, says this incredibly bias Bright Eye's fan. From "Wide Awake, It's Morning"

"Well I'm changing all my strings
I'm gonna write another travelin' song
About all the billion highways
And the cities at the break of dawn
Well, I guess the best that I can do now
Is pretend that I done nothing wrong
And a dream about a train that's gonna
Take me back where I belong
Well, now the ocean speaks and spits
And I can hear it from the interstate
And I'm screaming at my brother on a cell phone
He is far away. . ."

TRACK 9: Can't Hardly Wait (Tim Version) - The Replacements
The Replacements - All for Nothing/Nothing for All - Can't Hardly Wait (The Tim Version)
COMMENTS:

Well, this is just about one of the best songs ever - and the "Tim Version" is a little bit stripped down, sloppier version than the original... With lyrics like: "I'll be there in an hour, take half a month - they're on foot. . . and
Jesus rides beside me; never buys any smokes" you're doing yourself a favor by listening to this classic!

TRACK 10: HWY R - The Rock-A-Teens The Rock*A*Teens - Sweet Bird of Youth - Hwy R
COMMENTS:

A personal favorite - song about a long drive in which doubt, regret, and resignment all come to terms in a kick-as progression of sound! From the amazing "Sweet Bird of Youth"

TRACK 11: Chicago - Sufjan Stevens Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise - Chicago
COMMENTS:

Well - it's a good song, made better by my memories of the great "Little Miss Sunshine" - featured prominently in the dark, comedic, classic road trip movie. Enjoy the ultra catchy, beautifully sung, chorus!

TRACK 12: Left and Leaving - The Weakerthans The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving - Left and Leaving
COMMENTS:

For the coming home part of the mix - brilliant title track to this great album. Jon K. Samson has a knack for wordplaythat makes me hate him out of admiration! This a tear-jerker, if ever there was.

"My city's still breathing (but barely it's true) through buildings gone missing like teeth. The sidewalks are watching me think about you, all sparkled with broken glass. I'm back with scars to show. Back with the streets I know. They never take me anywhere but here... I wait in 4/4 time. Count yellow highway lines that you're relying on to lead you home."

TRACK 13: Take It Easy (Love Nothing) - Bright Eyes Bright Eyes - Digital Ash In a Digital Urn - Take It Easy (Love Nothing)
COMMENTS:  A lesson for us all - one that we're bound to forget and keep forgetting. An anthem for the wise!

"Now I do as I please, and I lie through my teeth
Someone might get hurt, but it won't be me
Should probably feel cheap, but I just feel free
And a little bit empty
No, it isn't so hard to get close to me
There'll be no arguments, we'll always agree
And I'll try to be kind when I ask you to leave
We'll both take it easy"
TRACK 14: Via Chicago (live) - Wilco Wilco - Kicking Television - Live In Chicago - Via Chicago
COMMENTS:

One of the best opening lines ever (hmm... may be my next mix), "I dreamed about killing you again last night, and it felt alright to me". This song, builds and falls and builds again with a combination of guitar and Tweedy's deadpan delivery of that can't help but sound a bit on the edge of desolation and desperation. Love this track!

"Rest my head on a pillowy star
And a cracked door moon
Says I haven't gone too far
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
Via Chicago
Searching for a home
Searching for a home
Via Chicago"

TRACK 15: Leave - R.E.M. R.E.M. - New Adventures in Hi-Fi - Leave
COMMENTS:

The R.E.M. bookend - this song clocks in at a mesmerizing 7 minutes and 20 seconds. The beginning transitions from strings to guitar is priceless! Can't recommend "New Adevntures in HiFi" enough for the soundtrack to your next trip...
